I Spent my vacation drawing people from LIFE for REAL
Checking off one off my wish lists of to-dos
Hi There,
How are you doing and how was your First Quarter of the year?
My Q1 almost did not exist as my kids had Term exam and vacations and not at the same time, but in rotation, one after another. It was really hectic and crazy trying to find some time of sanity and art whilst managing the chores, studies and exam stuff. It was like trying to keep my balance when juggling multiple balls in air at the same time.
Just So glad it’s all over and kids are back in school while I get some time for art and getting back to a routine. But first I will make a huge cuppa coffee and see what I missed out on Netflix.
Today’s is a sneak peak into what I drew from Life during my short mini-vacation in Baku.
Honestly, I was so excited to share all the pictures and give you a little tour into the beautiful city, but I just got back and still not back into a work/creative mode (the usual creative slump as always, the trouble of getting started after a break is so real). So expect that coming in one of the weeks.
I drew (people) from LIFE for the first time.
In the past, I had drawn from life only coffee shops, food on table and stuff that didn't move and others didn't care about. Oh yes, I had drawn loads of hens, chickens and roosters too. But drawing people from Life was so intimidating and scary. What if someone put frowned at me? what if I got jailed?
But I did for real for the first time and loved it so so soooo much. Maybe I got bold and brave for the first time, because it was a new place and I didn’t know anyone and nobody knew me. So the pressure of someone who I know noticing wasn’t there for once.
Here's a few from my sketchbook pages.
I had taken with me 2 sketchbooks,
one a A5 size which I usually keep for regular drawing, I used this for drawing people passing on the street from, the hotel balcony
And an A6 size which I took along during the trip and drew on the go.
This is from the balcony of the hotel we stayed at. And I could get a bit more details of people on streets, as I followed them across the walk along the street. See here the long stretch of walk.
Here’s some more from sketchbooks, but from the hotel balcony, so I had a lot more time to draw as they walked through the street

A selfie from the Pictures-
After coming back from vacation, I got so lost as to what to draw, so I drew from a picture of myself in one of the images
Some more Sketchbooking pages but the ones I drew with my illustrator friends from the Baku pictures.
So that’s the peak into the much talked about wish list on my to-do list - drawing people from life.
I love to know if you draw from life. If yes, then what subjects do you draw. Do you draw people?
Do let me know in the chat any tricks, suggestions, tips for drawing from life. I need it more than ever before.
Great stuff, Rekha! Lovely to zoom-meet you today.
The idea of drawing people from the balcony is genius 😄 looks like you had a great time, would love to see more about Baku! Your self portrait is lovely Rekha 💖
