Bored? No time? Switch it up
You are right place if you are busy, or donno what to draw, too many ideas.
Hi There,
For today I had plan to write about something else. I had even started and have it in my drafts. But the happenings this week felt like that can wait and I got to tell you about something else.
We are having a long weekend here and kids are already on summer break. Which means, my days are just so unpredictable when it comes to having a schedule for getting art done.
For this week I did some fun work apart from illustrations and I am just so happy.
Firstly I played with drawing with sticks and I used a plushie dog for model. She belonged to my daughter when she was little. She has outgrown it now, but I have saved her because I really love her. So many memories attached. Her name is Goldie if you are wondering what to call her.
So here's using Goldie as a model for drawing with sticks.
Painting using STICKS
Yes, I used STICKs to paint. And this time I used gouache paints unlike everytime when I use either acrylic inks or acrylic paints. And I didn’t feel too much of change.
Painting Cans
I also painted on a canned tomato can. This was just so so fun. I love painting on surfaces. And I have so many juice bottles, and cans that are hand painted. And it's really so fun and liberating to see something that was meant to go into a trash can turn into a beauty that adornes your desk.
And here’s how it looks from start to finish
Step 1- Our Hero- The Can that's about to get a Makeover
Step 2- Painting over the can to cover up the packaging and ready to prep
Step 3- Start painting. I wanted this one to be stress free and was prepared for any ugly result. I was not too precious of how it looked. I only and only wanted to have fun
Step4- TA-DA Heres how it looks. All done
This was just so soooooooooooooo fun.
When you feel stuck or bored and don’t feel like doing.
Here are some of the things I do to break the boredom and feel inspired again.
CHANGE-
Maybe use different materials, or colors or even color palettes you hate or never used
Change the place you work at everyday. Show up at a different place. Sometimes I sit on the floor or work in a different room or at a desk I never use for working. It does something different to my brains. Sometimes nothing changes and that’s ok too.
Do totally different stuff. Maybe pottery, paint ceramics, crochet. Do you Stitch? Or embroider? Maybe learn a new musical instrument or maybe sign up for a dance class.
Go out and look. Sometimes. When I am totally uninspired or not know what to draw next, I go out with a PURPOSE. I make a note on my mobile of things that I found interesting- here are few that I had written on one such walks- kid wiped the melted ice cream on dads t-shirt and dad got totally mad, a lady was on her walk carrying her dog (like WHAT!!!!), lots of sunflowers in front of a store. And so on and on. Maybe none of them make sense, maybe I wouldn’t use any of them. That’s NOT MY INTENSION. I am just training my eye to LOOK. And most of the times, something I notice connects to something else.
Other stuff could be down the rabbit hole of Pinterest, drawing stuff around your house or desk.
There are umpty number of other stuff you can do, and what works for one, may not work for you, find what works for you. Or find a mix of things that work for you. But if you never try, you would never know if it works or not.
Or just take a break and come back.
On update on my 100 days of character project-
Week 2 of 100 days of CHARACTERS
If you have read my last weeks Post, you might remember, I am doing a personal project of 100 days of characters. This is more of a personal project, so I can stretch myself, get uncomfortable, try new stuff, and fail. I do not intend to post every day on my Instagram simply because I wanted it to be tension free. I didn’t want to get into the tightness of once again stressing if something is good enough .
So here is snapshot of what I did this week.
Week 2 of 100 Days of Characters
Lemme know if you would like to post the collage of my 100 days of characters here or is it not something that interests you.
These characters make me smile every time. What a joy!
Great ideas, Rekha. Thanks for sharing. Did you take the paper label off the can before you painted it? Did you paint right on the can? Such a cute idea!
